On a stormy summer night in an abandoned lot in downtown Lincoln, Nebraska...
...a bunch of twentysomethings with big hearts and very little theatre training performed X FILES: THE MUSICAL!, a massive musical parody of 90's cult hit THE X-FILES. Their props were constructed from cardboard, their singing was sometimes off key, but their creativity, passion, and weirdness was undeniable. Aliens and human-animal hybrids took the stage, UFOs glowed in the sky above, mad scientists and the Smoking Man waxed philosophic, and, of course, Mulder and Scully doggedly searched for the truth while trying to ignore their unresolved sexual tension. A live audience of over 700 people was mostly captivated and amused, partially disturbed and confused. Passersby were overheard saying, "That looks...interesting."
One thing was clear: these kids wanted to believe. They wanted to believe so damn bad.
Having performed the show in one try without seriously injuring anyone, they decided to shoot for the moon one more time and record the soundtrack...in one try. That's what this album is. It's a stripped down, one-take-that's-it, sing-your-heart-out labor of love, accompanied by an orchestra, with original music and lyrics composed and written by a team from The Colonel Mustard Amateur Attic Theatre. It's ghetto, it's great, it's rough, it's moving, it's hilarious, it's exciting, it is what it is.
